Ane Albillos Sánchez

PhD Student

Bioprinting of microtissues for osteochondral tissue engineering

Ane comes from San Sebastian, a small coastal city located in the North of Spain. She concluded her bachelor degree in Biochemistry at the University of Navarra (Spain). Then, she decided to move to The Netherlands to pursue a Biofabrication Double Master's degree. For her minor research project she joined the Department of Orthopaedics at the University Medical Center Utrecht, where she worked on the characterization of a cartilage binding bioink for cartilage biofabrication. During her second year of master’s programme, she fulfilled her major research project at the Australian Institute for Innovative Materials facility at the University of Wollongong. She worked on the coaxial bioprinting of nerve and muscle cells to form neuromuscular junctions in vitro.

In April 2020, Ane started her PhD at the MERLN Institute. Her PhD project is part of a European project called JOINTPROMISE that aims to develop an automated and GMP-grade platform to produce large, patterned, and vascularized joint implants to address osteochondral regeneration. Ane’s work will focus on 3D bioprinting microtissues to tissue engineer the cartilage and subchondral bone layers of these implants.
