Scaffold fabrication using bioactive molecules for vascular tissue regeneration

Gabriele Obino concluded his bachelor’s degree in biotechnology at the University of Sassari, then, he moved to Turin where he completed his master’s in industrial biotechnology at the University of Turin. It was during his master's degree that he became deeply interested in regenerative medicine with a thesis project carried out at the National University of Ireland Galway, working on the development of a High Throughput Screening (HTS) to test extracts from marine organisms on human mesenchymal stem cells, to evaluate their potential to induce osteogenic and chondrogenic differentiation.

In December 2021 Gabriele started a PhD project at the University of Sassari for the fabrication of biomimetic scaffolds functionalized with bioactive molecules for blood vessels regeneration.
Rapid endothelization of the scaffold is an important aspect of consideration for the success of any given small-diameter vascular graft to prevent thrombus formation. In order to improve scaffolds biocompatibility, the project involves the use of bioactive molecules, such as glycans purified from marine invertebrates, glycosaminoglycan and ECM proteins, to functionalize the surfaces of the scaffolds. In September 2022 he moved to Maastricht, were he joined the CTR department of MERLN institute, to continue his PhD project.
