Lotte Smeets

PhD Student

In 2020 Lotte received her bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Sciences from Zuyd University of Applied Sciences. She went to the University in Maastricht where she received a master’s degree in Biomedical Sciences, specializing in inflammation and pathophysiology, in 2022. For her master’s thesis, she performed her internship at the department of pediatrics at Maastricht University. The project was focused on stem cell-induced modulation of the fetal immune system. While working on this project Lotte got the opportunity to collaborate with MERLN Institute. Together with the group of Dr. Sabine van Rijt, stem cells were labeled with nanoparticles to answer bio-distributional and mechanistic questions. In 2022, Lotte started her professional career as a technician at MERLN Institute in the group of Dr. Sabine van Rijt in collaboration with the department of pediatrics at Maastricht University.

In 2023, Lotte started her PhD at MERLN Institute and the department of pediatrics at Maastricht University. She continued the project she started working on during her master’s internship and technician period in which the main goal is to unravel the biodistribution of mesenchymal stem cells in vivo.
