Sofia Fallo

Postdoc

Stem cell therapy and biomarker discovery in cornea pathologies

Sofia obtained her degree in Pharmacy from the University of Bologna, before pursuing her Ph.D. in Medical Biotechnologies at the University of Turin (Italy). During her Ph.D., her primary focus was on investigating the role of the transcription factor Erg in the pathophysiology of kidney glomerular endothelial cells. Additionally, she contributed to studies on both antitumoral and regenerative potential of extra-cellular vesicles derived from human stem cells. Following her Post-doc in Italy, Sofia joined MERLN Institute in October 2023 as a new Post-doctoral researcher in the field of Ophthalmology and she became a member of the laboratory led by Professor Vanessa LaPointe and Professor Mor Dickman. In this role, Sofia is engaged in diverse projects based on the maintenance and renewal of limbal epithelial stem cells (LESCs). She is also involved in proteomics research of Aqueous Humor, with the aim of identifying biomarkers in patients with Fuchs Endothelial Corneal Dystrophy (FECD).

Outside of her research activity, Sofia enjoys hiking in the mountains with her dog and camping.
