The experiments we perform at MERLN benefit from tools that have been developed that allow us to follow cells and even influence their behaviour. For example, we can genetically engineer cells to turn a colour when a key protein is synthesized, or repress the activity of a gene of interest to better understand its function. We have a toolbox to follow differentiation of cells over time both in 2D and 3D cultures. We have the ability of cultivating several cell types together in so-called co-cultures. We can characterize cells analyzing their surface proteins, their proteins produced as well as their transcriptional activity. Furthermore, live cell imaging can follow cell behavior.
