Development of an in vitro neurovascular platform

Afonso studied Biomedical Engineering during his late formative years. Not bored of the subject, he went for a PhD in Maastricht, the hilliest part of the Netherlands. There, he joined MERLN to start a project that involves mostly biofabrication and cell biology. The goal is to develop a 3D in vitro peripheral nerve platform for tissue innervation. Particularly, our interest lies in combining nerve tissue with vasculature to form a neurovascular platform. However, we are also interested in exploring other multi-tissue combinations such as innervated skin models. Besides working, Afonso enjoys contemplating the frailty of life and speaking in the third person.
