MERLN turned into a crime scene investigation lab this week! We invited two classes from primary school Scharn in Maastricht to help us out with investigating a murder and putting the right suspect behind bars!
In this outreach event sponsored by the BioChemical Society and the KNAW, MERLN joined forces with the Pharmacology and Toxicology department to show kids what it is like working in a laboratory. Of course, they started of the day by first following a lecture on DNA, given by Martijn van Griensven. The kids put this newly acquired knowledge to the test, by isolating the DNA in samples of a range of suspects and using special techniques to find out who was the murderer! For a report on this exciting day, have a look at this video from 1Limburg.
A big thank you to everyone involved in this project and of course to both school classes from Scharn who were exemplary scientists with a bright future in research!
