CSI: Maastricht - Solving crimes!

MERLN turned into a crime scene investigation lab again last week! We invited two classes from primary school Scharn in Maastricht to help us out with investigating a murder that took place in the MERLN labs. It was up to the junior investigators to put the right suspect behind bars!

In this outreach event MERLN joined forces with the Pharmacology and Toxicology department to show kids what it is like working in a laboratory. The classes started of the day by attending a lecture on the wonderful microscopic world of DNA, given by Martijn van Griensven. The newly acquired knowledge was put to the test, by isolating the DNA in samples of a range of suspects and using special techniques to find out who was the murderer!

A big thank you to everyone involved in this project and of course to both school classes from Scharn who were exemplary scientists with a bright future in research!
