Kanade Kaneko

PhD Student

Development of injectable, dynamic, and self-healing metal coordination hydrogels for bone fracture repair

Kanade obtained her bachelor’s degree at Maastricht Science Programme from Maastricht University and a master’s degree in chemistry from École Polytechnique in France. In September 2025, she returned to start her PhD under the supervision of prof. Dr. Sabine van Rijt.

Her project focuses on the development of metal-ligand coordination-based hydrogels with functionalized polymers, silica nanoparticles, and metal ions. Such material is attractive for bone tissue engineering, due to the reversible coordination bonds. This can be injected as a soft paste, then solidify, repeatedly heal damage, and even release bioactive metal ions. The main goal of her research is to investigate the physical and chemical properties of hydrogels and their potential applications in bone tissue engineering.
