Originally from Portugal, João holds a Master’s degree in Bioengineering from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto. His dissertation focused on formulating physiologically relevant multicellular vascular units using iPSC-derived cardiac cells to improve the microvascularization of scaffolds. This provided him a strong foundation in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.
Now a PhD Candidate at MERLN since 2025, João aims to develop scalable biofabrication methods for 3D bioprinted cardiac models to study ageing. As part of the FAB4FUTURE project, he is researching how to integrate cutting-edge biofabrication techniques to create highly reproducible and scalable cardiac tissue models. These will provide valuable tools to better understand the ageing process in cardiovascular systems and drive therapeutic innovation.
