Simon completed his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Medical Engineering in Aachen. He is part of the BIOMEND project, a Europe-wide doctoral programme consisting of 15 PhD candidates. He started his PhD in June 2025.
His doctoral research is a collaboration between the startup Medical Magnesium, based in Aachen, and Maastricht University. The BIOMEND project focuses on the development of bioabsorbable metallic endovascular medical devices. Within this framework, Simon’s research concentrates on the further development of stents made from magnesium as the base material.
A central component of his work is the preclinical validation of such large-scale devices. For this purpose, he develops and applies advanced imaging techniques in large animal models to enable a detailed assessment of device performance under realistic physiological conditions.
